Chapter Eight

Lindsey sat with Paul at the kitchen island, drinking coffee, when Gia came bounding into the room.

“Am I late?” She placed her jacket on the kitchen counter, and leaned against it.

“Not at all.” Lindsey smiled as her gaze rolled over Gia and her pulse quickened. She wanted to close the distance between them and greet her with a passionate morning kiss, but the intimate line still hadn’t been crossed, and permission hadn’t been granted. Thanks a lot, Paul, she playful snarled in her head. “I came a little early and brought coffee.” She handed Gia a cup. “I figured Paul might not be in the best shape to make his own this morning.”

He placed his elbows on the counter, hunched over his cup, and started rubbing his temples. “You guys, I feel like shit. Why didn’t one of you come to my rescue last night and slap the drinks out of my hand?”

She chuckled as she hugged him. “Because, my friend, you were having fun.”

“Please tell me I didn’t hula dance.”

“Oh yeah, you did.” Gia chuckled as she took a sip of her coffee.

“Was I any good?”

“You were so amazing that two guys came over and stuffed money in your pocket,” Lindsey said as she scooted off the barstool and headed to the refrigerator. A flash of warmth came over her as her eyes meet Gia’s.

“Are you bullshitting me?” He reached in his front pockets and pulled out two five-dollar bills. “Damn, I must have been really good.” He let the bills fall onto the counter, then glanced at them. “Where are you two beauties off to today?”

“I’m taking Gia to Crenshaw Caverns,” Lindsey said as she broke eye contact and topped off her coffee with more soymilk.

“Thought they were closed on Wednesdays,” Paul said as he returned to rubbing his temples.

“They are. Paiton said she would open it up for us so Gia could have a private tour.”

“Paiton the pit bull?” Paul said with surprise. “Damn, girl, you got some pull. It’d be easier to get a favor from God. How’d you make that happen?”

“I may have mentioned the L Online angle, and she may have mentioned back how awesome it would be if her photo made it into the article.” Lindsey’s real motive was to create another memory that meant something. The caverns were one of the places she’d go to decompress while Jenn or Paul sat with her mom. The untouched beauty of the cave not only calmed her, it brought her to a place of balance. Today, she was hoping the experience would bring her and Gia closer together.

“You bribed her?” Paul said in a soft voice as he slowly brought his cup to his lips.

“I wouldn’t call it bribery. More like an exchange of mutual understanding.” Lindsey smiled.

Paul laughed. “Ow.” He placed his cup back on the counter and returned to rubbing his head. “That hurt.”

Gia pulled a small bottle of aspirin from her purse. “You might want to take two of these.”

He glanced up.
